Lead shielding no longer recommended for X-ray patients - Shaw Local News Network

Medical imaging center CGH Medical Center in Sterling, Illinois, has stopped using lead shields on patients during imaging exams. This change is based on revised recommendations from respected radiology industry agencies, such as the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. These agencies have concluded that patient shielding is no longer necessary for X-rays. The purpose of radiological protection, including shielding, is to reduce the likelihood of harm, and advancements in technology have significantly reduced the amount of radiation used in medical imaging. Shields can interfere with dose-saving features and may increase the radiation exposure from exams. However, there are still situations where shielding may be used, such as when a radiologic technologist wears a shield or when a pediatric patient or their parent/guardian requests it. CGH Medical Center encourages patients to talk to their technologists if they have any questions or concerns.
